May 3, 2014 ~ Adult Health and Gerontology

May 3, 2014 ~ Adult Health and Gerontology

This semester has been a very busy and a very stressful one but it has also been one of the most enjoyable. We had Adult Health 1 with Kelly and Gerontology with Mary Hackie. Mary put so much time into the class and she made Gerontology fun, which probably would have been boring otherwise. Mary had hands on activities throughout the class. We fed each other baby food one class period because we were learning about the end of life and she wanted us to know how it felt to be fed. The person that was being fed had a blindfold on which made things more interesting. It was actually very weird being fed, having no control over how much food was being eaten and no control over how often a bite was taken. She also had us put sunglasses on with Vaseline on the inside to simulate how it would feel to see with Macular Degeneration. Every class period we had a "Rock Question" and whoever could answer the question correct first got a rock for their team. I was on Team 2 with April, Shuanna, and Asher. At the end of the semester whichever team had the most rocks won, and of course my team won! She gave the whole class fun mugs at the end of the semester but since my team won we got a mug filled with goodies.

Adult Health 1 with Kelly was really good also. She taught us a ton of interesting material and she told stories a long with it so it made it more interesting. We had group projects in Adult Health 1 and lets just say one group was very entertaining and very creative.

For clinical our group was at Summerlin hospital on the Med-Serg floor and Elita was our instructor. At first I was disappointed with clinical because there weren't very many educational nurses but once we got to know the nurses it was a good experience. I remember one clinical day when Jen and I were on a different wing of the Med-Serg floor and we were helping our nurse Shandy. Shandy had a lot of complex patients and because of that we had a lot of hands on experience and helped her a lot. We would hang IV bags for her left and right when they would run out, we helped change and fit an ostomy bag and we helped irrigate a CBI. It was a really good day and I felt more like a nurse because of the hands on experience.

Team 2: Me, April, Asher and Shuanna, aka the WINNERS. Plus Jeff and Patti who photobombed the picture.

For one class period if you left the classroom you had to walk with a walker so you would know how hard it is to get around with one!

Here are some of the pictures from the class where we fed each other baby food.

Pati didn't really like the taste of the baby food.

She had us put toilet paper rolls in our hands for a whole class period to simulate having arthritis in our hands.

Every class period she had a rock question and here are the teams for the rock questions.

Here is our whole Gerontology class.

Who would have though learning about Cancer would be so entertaining. The Game Show group presentation on Cancer.
